First off, we understand that for some users the scaling site may seem like a horrible design concept. For those users, the static, traditional site was created. Click on the AR-15.COM logo at the top left to change templates. The scaling site was made to accommodate a small group of people, and provide a platform for advanced use of the site well into the future. The traditional site is exactly that - designed like any regular website.
Now, what is a live scaling site?
We dare say, this is probably the very first online, ever. A live scaling site will "scale" or zoom in and out, to match any screen size or width. Not stretch, not center, not reposition. It will look nearly identical at any size or resolution.
Why did you open with a site that works for few and has problems for many?
We nearly had to re-invent the wheel to make this idea possible. Creating a traditional website by using this as a base was accomplished in record time. However, if we had gone about it the other way around (traditional site first) this project would never have been possible. The scaling site is a template we will be improving for years to come, and it is VERY far from perfect as it is so new, however as prices and technology changes, and people start to bring home value priced large monitors, the traditional way of designing sites will have to change. We made this in the hope to stay ahead of the game.
When will an easy-to-use, traditional site be opening?
It's open! Click on the AR-15.COM logo at the top left to change templates.
What does this scaling site really look like?
This is the site viewed with a very large monitor (on top) and a very small one (on bottom):
But wait! there is trickery afoot. The screenshot of the large monitor was resized. Here is what the site actually looks like on a very large screen:
Notice that the main difference between the two is a larger monitor has more detail available but views nearly the same - exactly how it should be.
We wont post comparisons of other firearms sites because we do not want to be viewed as hostile. Any website on the Internet generally leaves two groups of people out. The people with very small monitors have to browse the Internet much like you would look at a 8x10 picture contained inside a 4x6 frame - it just doesn't fit! On the other hand, people using very large screens are reduced to browsing the Internet looking at a 4x6 picture contained in an 8x10 frame - extra detail should be available, but it is not there.
This template, works to address site design for those two groups of people - again, it is by no means the best way to access this site. We recommend the use of the static site for most situations.
